A man was sentenced Thursday in Cook County District Court for allegedly buying the fake Viagra, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction, in order to get more money from his unemployed wife.
A federal judge handed down a $2 million fine against the man, who was charged with money laundering, possession of counterfeit drugs, and money laundering after he allegedly bought the fake Viagra on Friday. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Michael Tuggle and United States Attorney David J. O'Brien.
In a sentencing memorandum, Tuggle said that if convicted, he would face “greater penalties than the sentence received today.” He added that the case “does not require a repeat offender penalty, nor does it require a repeat offender defendant to be held accountable for his actions.”
Tuggle said that the victim, who was not named, was in possession of the fake Viagra. She told court she was buying it from an online pharmacy that was selling the fake medication. According to Tuggle, the victim was arrested after she purchased the fake Viagra from her online pharmacy. Tuggle said the victim then took the fake Viagra and placed it on her home floor and then sold it to another person who wanted it.
